As a long time fan of Nine Inch Nails and Trent Reznor himself, just like every other NIN fan I have been waiting a lovely (and agonizing 5 years) for NIN to release something new. And although Reznor had released several things since then, including the “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2012)” official soundtrack and a collaboration with his wife in How To Destroy Angels, it still hasn’t been the same without a new NIN album.
In case you have been living under a rock or locked in an attic somewhere, if you don’t know Nine Inch Nails, their music is an excellent place to start. Don’t bother with that Reznor discovered Manson, or bother with someone like Johnny Cash covering the deeply intellectual and painful NIN song hurt. What matters is that you have been living in an attic, and its time to knock the door down and visit the sunshine.
Their upcoming 2013 release of Hesitation Marks, is almost exactly what I expected to hear from NIN as well as nothing I anticipated. As most of you know, three songs have been released internationally. The first Came Back Haunted was the first single off of the album. It’s exactly what you would expect from an ever evolving artist such as Nine Inch Nails. With the return of Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder, and the artistic genius of Trent Reznor, you would expect nothing less from a first single. Then came the second single, Everything. I first heard this song on the radio, and at first I was unsure. It’s more pop-rock than anything I’ve ever heard Nine Inch Nails.
As for the rest of the album, you can’t expect anything. NIN incoropates New Wave, Funk, Industrial, and a little Alternative and turn it into something NIN. It goes from fun, to bland, to holy shit. Its a mind blowing album you will either love or hate. It officially comes out September 3rd and if you are a NIN fan, buy it. Support music, and support the bands you love. Deluxe Editions will be available.
